DON BOSCO SOLAR DAY

The annual event, Don Bosco Solar day was organised and celebrated on the 20th November 2025 at the institute auditorium in Ashaiman – Tema, Ghana. This year’s event was proudly supported by the Skilling Eco-VET project initiative through Don Bosco Youth Network (DBYN). The Don Bosco Solar Day is an awareness and celebration event organized by the Don Bosco Solar and Renewable Energy Centre in Ashaiman – Tema, Ghana. The day focuses on promoting solar energy, renewable technologies, youth training in PV installation, and sustainable energy practices. The Don Bosco Solar and Renewable Energy Centre specializes in solar photovoltaic (PV) training for young people, particularly those with an electrical background, offering courses from basic to advanced professional levels in solar installation, design, maintenance, and renewable energy systems.

The event was witnessed by more than 150 participants from the renewable energy industry, students, past students (graduates), managers and CEOs within the clean energy ecosystem in Ghana. The event among others is set aside to showcase the institute’s programs as well as highlighting student projects, innovations (like mobile solar power bikes or mini-grids), and achievements in green energy. The students from the department had demonstrations, exhibitions, and the opportunity to network with industry partners.

During his presentation, Br Chris Baum (Director, Don Bosco Solar Department) explained how the newly installed Green Hydrogen system works. The system is the second of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa aside South Africa. The system integrates with an existing solar mini-grid: excess solar power runs an electrolyzer to split water into hydrogen and oxygen; hydrogen is stored and later converted back to electricity via a fuel cell, reducing reliance on diesel generators and cutting emissions by up to 90%. There were moments of sharing between the past students and the current as well as discussions with the industry partners about the trends and challenges in the industry.
